I guess the aim of closed systems and product improvements is to reduce the risk of contact with body fluid, which can happen if staff are emptying out drainage systems, regardless of the precautions taken. A paper published in Infection Control and Hospital epidemiology, investigated blood and blood fluid exposures sustained by house officers, medical students and nurses. It found that of 235 exposures to nurses, "blood contact and wound drainage" accounted for 13,2%. This figure is surprisingly high and indicates the need to reduce this risk wherever possible.
